Window shutters make a beautiful addition to any home. Window shutters are easy to clean, making them the preferred option for many homeowners. Compared with their window covering counterparts such as blinds and curtains, window shutters are easier to maintain. After investing in your stylish window shutters, you want to make sure you’re taking care of them in the right way. Here are our top tips for keeping your shutters looking their best.

Start from the top of the window shutters

When cleaning your window shutters, it is always best to start from the top. This is because if you start from the bottom and move to the top, the top slats will cause dust to fall onto your nicely cleaned shutters below. Start from the top and work your way down to avoid this problem.

Wipe dust away regularly

Most window shutters will only really need a regular wipe. The main maintenance issue for shutters is that they collect dust. As such, just make sure you’re regularly using a clean, dry cloth to clear away the dust and you will avoid further problems or dust build up. A regular clean will make it easier to avoid a deep clean.

Take care if using a hoover

If you’ve decided to give your window shutters a deep clean, you might use a hoover. If you do, make sure to use a small, dry but soft brush. Avoid using metal nozzles or hard brushes as these can scratch and cause damage to your shutters.

Use suitable cleaning products

As with anything else in your home, you want to ensure you’re cleaning your shutters with suitable products. Window shutter materials vary, so when it comes to deep cleaning, you need to take care. Some materials will be more sensitive to certain cleaning products than others. Always check the label on your cleaning product to determine whether or not it is suitable to use. Don’t spray anything directly onto the shutter and avoid using strong chemicals. If in doubt, it’s best not to use it. Using a cleaning product is not particularly necessary but if you do decide to use one, test in a concealed area first.

Wipe down persistent stains

Sometimes, stains on shutters can be persistent. This might be the case where shutters reside in the kitchen and catch spills and splashes from the cooking and sink, or in the kid’s playroom and are subject to dirty fingerprints. However, it is still possible to clean these effectively. To do so, if you have wooden shutters, just take a damp cloth and rub the area until clean. Make sure to immediately dry with a dry cloth to ensure that there is no left-over moisture as this could damage the wood.

Don’t use force

Your shutters are an investment and a great addition to your home, so make sure you don’t accidentally use too much force. If your shutters are too stiff to operate properly, don’t use excess force as this will damage them. Instead, use a screwdriver to adjust them accordingly. A little care and gentleness go a long way in prolonging the lifespan of your shutters.
